About Dr. Donald Garden

Dr. Donald S. Garden (OAM) is one of Australia’s most respected historians, widely recognised for his contributions to the study and preservation of Australian and environmental history. With a career spanning several decades, Dr. Garden has authored numerous publications, including the acclaimed Albany: A Panorama of the Sound from 1827, a definitive work that captures the spirit, challenges and transformation of Western Australia’s oldest settlement.

A past President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, the Federation of Australian Historical Societies and Life Member of the Albany Historical Society, Dr. Garden has been instrumental in fostering community engagement with local and regional history across Australia. His research combines academic rigour with an accessible storytelling style, making history both engaging and relevant to modern audiences.

In recognition of his outstanding service to history and heritage, Dr. Garden was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). His passion for uncovering and sharing stories of place and people continues to inspire new generations of historians and enthusiasts.
